Yucatàn Mexico: My travel diary – Part II
Second and final part of my photo-travelogue in Yucatàn… If you haven’t already read the first, stop and click HERE! Otherwise, go ahead… Enjoy!
DAY 4: CHICHEN ITZA
After packing our suitcases, we left the Hacienda Temozon to move to what would be the third and final hotel of this trip. But before that it has been for us one of the most intense and interesting days of the whole holiday… In which I visited my first Cenote!
For those who had never heard of it, cenotes are ancient formations: a kind of caves that contain within them small freshwater lakes, very cool despite the outside temperature is high. What you see in the picture is the Cenote of Xocenpich. There is an adjoining restaurant, where you can dine fully immersed in one of the most charming and unique places on the planet!
After lunch we moved to Chichén Itzà, to visit one of the biggest and most important Mayan archaeological sites. This, too, like the previous one that I visited (Uxmal), has been declared by UNESCO a world heritage site and also included in the list of the seven wonders of the modern world. And it is for real! The site includes several stone buildings, including the impressive Temple of Kukulkàn: a pyramid with steps that reach up to the top!
This was the time of travel in which I most suffered from the heat: I don’t know how many degrees there were, but the humidity and the absence of wind were painful and I coudn’t take all the pictures that I wanted! If you’re planning to go there, I suggest not to forget to bring a bottle of cold water and a hat for sun protection.
In the evening we reached Hotel Wyndham Mérida. Compared to the other hotels I stayed during this trip, I have to admit that is my least favorite… No hammock and no Mexican style furniture, but still nice and clean.
DAY 5: IZAMAL
The fifth day of my Yucatàn trip was totally dedicated to discovery the small town of Izamal. Known by the nickname “Yellow City” (most of its buildings are in fact painted in yellow ocher), Izamal is a place of pilgrimage. Its monastery, built on the ruins of an ancient Mayan pyramid, is the largest Catholic building in the entire region.
Walking through the town we then reached the central square, where a colorful Luna Park was set: there the atmosphere was much more playful and fun!
On the way back we stopped for dinner at the Restaurant Rosas Y Xocolates, who won the award for best Mexican restaurant within a hotel. We have seen it in the evening after dark, but then we came back the last day to photograph it because it’s really cute and all pink!
DAY 6: IK KIL CENOTE
New day, new adventure. This time all dedicated to discovering the Cenote of Ik Kil, near Pisté.
This Cenote has impressed me even more than the one in Xocenpih because it is very deep (about 40 meters), it has a small waterfall and is surrounded by rainforest. To reach the blue water you have to climb some steep of a very slippery staircase, which is carved into the limestone. Alternatively you can dive in Tarzan-style, sliding down with a harness and a rope… In any case, it is really worth!
After this wonderful experience we came back to the hotel and we prepared the luggage to have them ready the next morning, the day of return, and enjoy the last hours in Mexico. We then went out again for dinner: we had a table booked at the Hotel’s Casa Lecanda Restaurant!
DAY 7: MERIDA
This was our last day in Mexico. Having the return flight late at night, we were able to spend most of the day in the Yucatàn capital city, Mérida, enjoying our time there and doing some shopping!
This completes my travel diary in Yucatan Mexico! I hope you liked it and that it can be of help to anyone of yu which is organizing a trip over there!
Happy Thursday to all of you!
